Question. What have the 1987 All Blacks and the 2007 Bokke got in common? Answer, both World Cup champion sides. Question. What have the 1991 All Blacks and the 2010 Bokke sides got in common? Answer, both holding onto the old guard too tightly, the veterans who have gone one campaign too many.

You beauty. At last the phoney war is over. Ireland and Wales are dispatched, and now the 'real' tests ate about to start - the ones that have trophies riding on them, where the results matter. But before we move onto these 'real' tests, isn't it sad that we now have a rugby 'traditionalist' like myself rating some internationals over and above others. Every test match is a real test match, or should be thought of as such. But if someone like me has fallen into thinking the early tests are less important than the Tri Series tests, than what chance new fans? Has the day of the international 'friendly' finally arrived, we just don't know it yet? |

All Blacks named for the first part of the Tri Nations, and pretty much as expected for me, perhaps one surprise omission, that of McAlister, I thought for sure he'd get the nod over Stanley. Good call from the Cartel though on that one though- after rushing him back in last season and having him look like a leper, it is a good idea to just let him get on the field and play rugby. His confidence will have to be back up after his good games for the NZ Maori, and a few hit outs with Harbour before injury force the Cartel's hand will be good for everyone. Better that he be playing 80 minutes each week as opposed to being player number 23 in the All Black set up - all training and no play makes LUke a dull boy. |

And this week my tips (also known as the Curse of Bart), for the first round of the Super 14...
I do claim early season blues though, as it is tough to tip when there is no form guide but the pre seasons nonsense, so a mixture of gut feelings, hope, past years form, and plain guesses follow. Especially the games when it is Boer v Boer or a Jail yard brawl between two Convict sides....
Please note I will also be claiming mid season blues and late season burn out as the Super 14 progresses.

Final voting starts now, get off your chuff...
Time is fleeting (said in the voice from the Rocky Horror Picture show)... and time to finish the selecting of the TSF team of the decade for the noughties. I have not the time, and hardly the inclination to review all the players for the remaining positions, so I won't, but we'll give you the voting options. Players missing, as you will have picked up from the earlier fuller voting synopsis', will be because they have not played enough tests in the period, or are just plain not good enough to be considered according to the TSF luminaries who decided on the final candidates for each position... |

Team of the decade - I better hurry - Super 14 will be starting before we know it (has there been a cricket season yet?) and time'll be short again. So we've sorted out the tight five, or at least the voting is going on now (click here), and the right decisions are being made. Now for the hard part - loose forwards. We've had some class over the last decade, along with some serious chaff too, but there are genuine contenders for all spots, although I'm picking the voting for openside flanker will be pretty clear cut - almost tempting to put a second vote option in to see who is rated number two behind McCaw. Again though, that would be pretty clear cut, with Kronfeld front runner there, with Holah and Masoe perhaps snaring a few votes as fans favourites, voting with their hearts, not their heads. |

Time to round out the tight-five, so that means the tall buggers who look unco - nine times out of ten anyway, yes, the locks. Now they are a much maligned bunch, not often getting the credit when due for a powerful scrum, with all the kudos there going to the front row, but I have no problems with that, so will edit this out later. About the only time they get any credit is when they look like kangaroos at lineout time, stretching for the ball and looking like champions at the top of their assisted leap. |

Who would be the stand out All Black captain of the decade?
Three candidates: MaCaw is firming as a great and has owned the last part of the decade. Umaga had universal approval as captain and was unquestioned. Thorne was mostly maligned and always questioned. It would seem a two horse race between MaCaw and Umaga both with un questioned leadership and results: |

Time flies over Christmas doesn't it?! Seems like just yesterday I was exposing the virtues of the fatties to have laid down their markers for the All Blacks in the last ten years. Although, props with any sort of virtue is sort of an oxymoron isn't it. And the second part of that big flash word would work for many props as a stand alone noun, or is that verb, or a pro-noun. Must be a pro-noun now that everyone is paid to play rugby eh... |

OK, the first onto the chopping block for the team of the decade, the props. In this instance, you are going to get two votes, with the top two getting the starting gigs, and third place-getter slotting into the bench spot. There have been some pretty strong props through this period of All Black history, and some pretty bloody useless ones too. We've weeded out most of the trash, and have come up with the following shortlist of nominations for the team of the decade. Joe McDonnell, Dave Hewett, Greg Feek... |

Well, how quick was that? Barely are we getting over the 1999 Rugby World Cup match that never happened, and then a millennium bug that was going to shut the world down, and in the wink of a bloodshot eye, ten years have slid by. Two more world cups never happened in this period, and we are nearing the second decade of the 2000s! Bugger me, time flies when you're having fun eh? |

The crystal ball has delivered the following predictions for 2010.
January: The Australian Tennis Open will be held in scorching hot conditions in Melbourne. The general media will mutter about the size of Serena Williams arse which will look like a couple of beach balls covered in a pink curtain. |

Well, done and dusted, another season in the can, meaning only one full season until the 2011 rugby world cup rolls around - talk about bloody quick, seems like just yesterday that latest game that never happened, happened. But lets not look too far ahead, lets look back over the last 6 or 7 weeks and the 2009 end of year tour, and I think we can look back on it with a little bit of optimism. |

To the rallying call of 'God Save the Queen' (someone tell me how THAT makes sense), a defacto Bok-Wallaby side trotted out as the Barbarians to face New Zealand 'A' - a supposed All Black side without Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu, Andrew Hore, Brad Thorn, Ali Williams, Kieran Read, Jerome Kaino, Dan Carter, Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Mils Muiliana. Like the new Asian Bledisloes, this was an exercise in 'ker-ching!' for the NZRU. It proved nothing - other than that New Zealand's second stringers can't beat the Wallaby-Bok first stringers.

Looking at the All Black squad (which the Cartel said would be judged on performance) there were a number of players outside of the established group (Mils, Sivi, Conrad, Nonu, Carter, Cowan, McCaw, Thorn, Woodcock and Hore) who were under the microscope performance wise.
Splitting them into 3 groups (Ticks who fared well, Crosses who didn't fare well and Question Marks for jury is still out on). Ticks Cory Jane - Probably moves into the established group after this tour. Sublime. The test in Wellington showed it and the Tour has shown consistency which is brilliant. Probably better on the wing at the moment but had a fine game at fullback v Baabaas. |

I love that headline - a bridge too far. I think I watch too many war movies, and that movie, without a doubt, is a classic. But I digress. The All Blacks versus the Barbarians, and can the midweekers +McCaw manage to beat this star studded side? In years gone by, the era of the tour, this team would whop up the Barbarians, as they would have played four or five matches together already. But this is 2009, and the All Black team is as hodge-podge as the Barbarians. |

How much is the top 6 inches influenced on a game or games? The Test against the French was a ripper of a game to watch, and both teams went out to play attacking, running rugby. The All Blacks have been saying they are close to playing their style of game, the one with crisp clean passing, running into gaps, using space, using the ball as well as super defense, setting goals of no tries against. Well in my opinion, they nailed it on Sunday morning. The best game I have seen in a long while from the boys in black. |

Yes, I used to be riveted to the screen during the Batman TV series as a young-un. And this test was deserving of cartton captions at times - probably during the super slow motion replays that the French love so much - they are excellent, something for Sky to look at I reckon. But I digress, Marseille, France, and a test match against the French. It was a forgone conclusion though, from the anthems. The French tears and insane looks were missing as they belted out La Marseillaise, and I thought then, "we're going to win this". Then in the second spell, when Chabel carted the ball up before being stopped dead by Kaino, that was when you knew it was safe, and it was not if, but by how much. |

Or is it me continuing to yawn? Nineteen to six. Another win for the All Blacks, and their line intact in the British Isles since 2007. That in itself is pretty amazing (if what I read is correct, and I can't be arsed checking), but balanced by the All Blacks scoring sod all tries too, as the game evolves once again into a new 'defence' era. |
