A night at the Rugby with Mr Henry Print E-mail
Written by Willie the Weka
Sunday, 01 April 2007

What would Willie do?Background: Mrs C2B goes to rugby park mid Saturday afternoon to get tickets to the kidszone for Chiefs V Blues game.  Lady behind the counter accidentally charges 5 kids tickets and 2 adults rather than 3 kids 2 adults. Mrs C2B pays cash before the error is noticed.

Then lady makes an error cancelling the 2 extra tickets and cancels all tickets.

The Clark whanau bowl up to the game unaware of this error, when tickets are rejected at gate, Mrs C2B explains situation, she is shown to some “Manager” whom is really nice and understands the dilemma.

However, in the mean-time the Manager when reissuing the tickets finds the kidszone has been sold out!! Mrs C2B asks “what now then?” Manager then smiles and says “ We will give you complementary tickets to the Brian Perry Upper Stand”

The Clark whanau thinks this is cool, better seats and “free” (Bart loves this word!!) We are then ushered straight past all the crowd at the gates, up stairs to our seats (it’s 7.32pm by now so we are a little anxious of missing the start) We are seated right on halfway!! Cool the whanau thinks!! The best seats ever at the cowshed for a big game!!

Then Willie casually looks around to see if you know anyone, as one does, to his amazement directly behind him is Mr W Smith and to Willies left shoulder is Mr G Henry!!!  Willie whispers like a child that has seen Santa to Mrs C2B, don’t look now but guess who’s sitting behind us, just like the movies, she looks straight away and says “Fuck that’s the All Black coaches” Willies oldest son’s jaw hits the ground!!

Soooo, up shot is, Willie’s ears are full on “super evesdrop mode" for the next 80 minutes!

Here are the one liners that I picked up………(Surprisingly they are similar to any two rugby heads in many ways – “great ball, nice kick, good vision, give it, what did he do that for, Chiefs have stopped playing – they are trying to protect that lead type comments”

Atinga : not mentioned all match
Howlett : Smith – he looks sharp. Henry –sure does, sharp in his play and thinking.
Wolf : Smith – great kick and chase. Henry – Mmm good vision, he’s a good young kid, plenty of ticker too.
Ice : Henry – he’s the best back on the park, needs to finish these breaks though, probably a little critical smithy? Yeah he does, I’m loving the battle with Kahui, both good young fellas, Ice is more explosive and gets to the outside a little better, both tackling well. (More on Kahui later)
McCalister : Smith – Lukey’s off, Henry what’s he done, Smith – looks like a jaw or check-bone. Henry let’s check on him after the game.
Tuitupo : Not mentioned
Tuiawea : Smith great kick, Henry he’s not bad for a winger – chuckles.
Gibson : Not mentioned
Williams : knocks on, Henry – that’s an emotional selection!! Can’t believe he hasn’t got Angus, far better skill set, work rate and tackle count, plus adds a line out option.
Kaino : Smith – Great second half. Henry –agree he’s playing well.
Braid : Henry who’s captain? Smith – think it’s Braid, he lead them out – Henry – did he? Smith Think so….Willie can’t help himself!!! Turns calmly and says “ yeah he did” Henry still looking at Willie says, that will do him good. Willie gets wood!!!
Rawlinson : Not mentioned all match
2nd Lock : not mentioned all match
Williams : Henry “Finally” Smith Mmm Chiefs are into him straight away - good test for his discipline.
Afoa : Not mentioned
Hooker : Not mentioned
Mealamu : Smith - Kevin looks explosive (as he scores from lineout drive) Henry – Great player – great man too!!
Woodcock : Henry – Tony’s killing them. Woodcock injured / subbed – Smith Tony’s off – Henry injured or subbed? Smith not sure he was holding his wrist, Henry let’s check after game.

Sweeney – not mentioned
Sivivatu – Smith - come on Siti you can chase better than that, Henry no, he was waiting and pulling up the ‘D’ line. Later – call for it Siti!! Go Siti your up against a flanker.
Kinikinilau – Not mentioned
Kahui – Smith – he’s a good young kid, I like him, good options, strong tackle, low error rate. Smith later – when Kahui grubbers – what did he do that for? Henry – to show us he has left foot? Smith – he shouldn’t. Kahui goes off 3 minutes to go, Smith whats he done? Henry – just cramp, good game Richard.
Taevea – Not really mentioned, just good hit here and there.
Donald – Not mentioned
Kelleher – Henry early in match when Kelleher was struggling with clearances: What’s going on there? Smith - not sure but he needs to sort it out!!

Lauaki – Smith - he’s too confrontational look he only needed to clear that, he’s trying to do too much…..
Bates – Not mentioned
Holah – Henry – Great take Marty off 1st kick-off, Smith I think he’s knocked out, Silence, Henry – Nope he’s up – he’s bloody tough. Comments all match about his ball carrying –complementary.
Robinson – All match – great takes, good clear out Robbo, Henry scathing of coaches not subbing him for Gibbs with 20 to go, “I know this games crucial for them but they need to look after him”
Ormsby – Not mentioned apart from when subbed –Smith pretty solid effort Ormsby.
Gibbs – 25 to play – Henry – they need to bring on jonno and get the crowd back into the game.
Front row Chiefs No one mentioned all game including Willis, apart from deMelmonch – Henry geez he fights for every inch doesn’t he, Smith yip he’s got plenty of ticker.

Overall impression: They didn’t come to watch just a couple of players all game, but rather like most rugby heads watch the game and comment on what they see.
The “inner circle” are on first name basis when commented on, the rest are surnames.
They where critical of Chiefs not attacking and kicking into corners in second half, trying to protect the lead.
They where very keen to check on “Woody” “Luke”and catch-up with “Robbo and Kevvy” after the game.

Willies summary: We lost, but hurt was lessened by seats and company. End of game, most junior willie is tired and cuddling dad, Mr H winks and smiles and said have a good night!! Great night at the footy!!
