There has a been a bit of talk, especially across the Ditch regarding Oram as a
'Poor mans Cairns', which I feel is unjustified as in some aspects of his career
to date Oram has done better than his illustrious predecessor.
Cairns was always going to be a hard act to follow but its fair to say so
far Oram is doing bloody well, after all it took years for Cairns to make an
impact.
Oram is currently 28,Cairns played his final ODI aged 35,so Oram has
plenty more time to add to his record.
Oram has certainly hit a purple patch, blasting 241 runs in 3 innings for
only once out. Included is the NZ record for the fastest ODI 100 ( a
record once held by Cairns himself). While he has always been considered
capable of hitting the big shots he rarely has to the extent that Cairns did
(once the record holder for the most test 6's).
But right now no one is striking the ball better and with as much power as
big Jake is at the moment, can he take NZ into the CB Finals and onto World Cup
glory? Maybe...
Here's the stats for each player, starting with their Test Records
Jacob Oram Chris

Appears Oram is the better of the 2 as a batsmen, where Cairns is the
better as a bowler. Oram has yet to take a 5 wicket bag.
Both have similar percentage of runs scored in Boundaries too,54% for Oram
vs 59% for Cairns.
Cairns strike rate is far superior to that of Orams as well, of note
Cairns has a better test bowling strike rate than that of Warne, Murili,
Courtney Walsh, Shaun Pollock, Wasim Akrim, Ambrose, Botham, and very
nearly the same as Imran Khan.

This time Oram has the slightly better bowling figures where Cairns has
better batting ones. Tho both are very similar, given Oram has played less
than half the
games that Cairns has anything could happen. Both have similar
strike rates with the bat though Oram scores more of his runs thru boundaries
than Cairns.
But Cairns 6's to games ratio is much higher 0.71 compared to Orams 0.44.
Unfair to call Oram the Poor Mans Cairns? I think its unfair to
compare any player to another. But unfortunately the comparisons will
always remain as both players are so similar in skill and stature.
Comparing Oram's current record with that of Cairns at the same stage
meant going back, way back... Took Chris Cairns nearly 8 years to play his
22nd test.
Oram Cairns (after 22 tests)

In ODI's
Oram has played 90 ODI's to date in his relatively short career, it took
Cairns over 7 years to play the same amount of games. Once again injuries
played a part in limiting his appearances.
Oram Cairns (after 90 ODI's)

Records still pretty similar, test bowling almost the same just in batting
does Oram shade Cairns.
In ODI's its the same with bowling, very similar, Cairns again just shades
Oram with the bat. But if we did this comparison before Oram arrived in Oz
last week it would be very different...back then he was only averaging 18 and
had yet to score a 100.
