Duluth's Favourites XV Print E-mail
Written by Duluth

First of all I think it is important to reiterate that this is a favourites team and not a list of who I think is the best player in each position.
Far from it. It is the players I have enjoyed watching and have wanted to see do well.

Props:
Steve McDowell
- Strong in the scrum and great around the field. I'm sure plenty of people have fond memories of his plays in the late 80's however one of the  main reason I picked him is because of his comeback in 1997(?)
Auckland was in a propping crisis and being such a good team man he responded to the SOS and helped stop the scrum back peddling (until they came up against Hoeft/Oliver and Kees.. but although we lost the scrums that day we spanked Otago on the scoreboard!)
Castro-Giovanni - The Leicester Tigers and Italian (poached via Argentina) Tighthead. I love the way he grins going into every scrum.
The way he destroyed the mythical Munster pack in last years HEC was largely down to this man.
I look forward to his battle with Woodcock in the pool match..
Honourable mention Nick White - Yes Nick white. It's my favourites list so fuck off. Main reasons for picking him are his longevity, he played for Auckland, he played for the Taniwha and because he regularly took long range penalty shots toe-hack style for Northland a few years back!

Hookers:
Kevin Mealamu - One of the few current players in my team. A ridiculously strong leg drive (see QF v SA in 2003) and made a few doubters eat their words about his lack of size when he first arrived for Auckland.
Hounorable mention Sean Fitzpatrick  - what a prick. I would have hated this guy if didn't support Auckland and the All Blacks.

Locks:
Andy Haden - A big annoying lump.. for the opposition. Did his job in the set pieces and managed to attract an extra amount of hatred from the opposition team and fans. The Welsh hate him so that's another positive.
Glenn Taylor - A Taniwha legend. My favourite memory I have of watching Taylor was the game against Canterbury where he lead a couple of great rolling maul tries through a mostly All Black pack (1999?)
Honourable mention Colin Meads - Well before my time but I have seen a lot of old games recently. Not just a one dimensional thug, at times it is like watching a modern player with modern fitness and skills playing amongst amateurs. He has his reputation for a reason.

Openside:
Michael Jones - Don't think I need to justify this one. A freak.
Honourable mention Pat Sanderson - Yes a pom. Again, it's my favourites list so fuck off. He has been poorly treated by the English selectors but has had good performances (in otherwise shite teams) against the 3Ns countries. Yet apparently Lewis Moody is better?!!
Can play the English kill the ball, throw dodgy punches style, but he is also a good pilferer and has an incredible passing game. A very underrated player.

No 8
Xavier Rush - Another great team man. Was unfairly criticised early in his career (it's not his fault he was selected!) but managed to provehimself over a long career.
Hounorable mention Andrew Blowers - Most kiwis never saw him at his best when he was with the Saints which is a shame. He regularly outplayed Dallaglio when Larry was at his peak.

Blindside
AJ Whetton - His play had two speeds. For most of the game he was a grafter doing the hard work but when it was time to cut loose he would suddenly start appearing outside JK and linked beautifully. Underrated when compared to the guys he played alongside in the backrow.
Honourable mention Mark Shaw - Before my time but saw some of his old games recently. At times during the 1981 Bok series it was like the Boks were too focused on getting back at Shaw than playing the game.

Halfback:
Ofisa Tonu'u - This guy had an incredible pass but unfortunately had a build that was more appropriate for playing Hooker. He had some flaws in his game but I enjoyed watching the amount of effort he put into every game. I think he's still waddling about in club rugby in Auckland. Good effort.
Honourable mention George Gregan - I tried to dislike him, I really did. He seems like such a good guy off the field. I love the way his on field performances keep giving two fingers to the section of the Aussie media that have a vendetta against him.

1st Five:
Carlos Spencer - Some of my favourite rugby watching memories come from this player. Was it the 1994 NPC semi that he scored all those tries and turned Jeff Wilson inside out 3 times on the way scoring one of them?
Honourable mention Thomas Castaignede - Similar player to Carlos, another great entertainer

2nd Five
Frank Bunce - I struggled here. I don't really like that many 12's for some reason..
I know who the best 12 I've seen was - it was Tim Horan. But he's a FluffyBunny. So he can't go on my list!
Bunce had a good 1991 World Cup at 12 so he can squeeze into my team.

Centre:
Eroni Clarke - Another Auckland legend, a player who deserved to play more Test matches. Unfortunately Mr Hart thought he was too slow so tried every other option post Bunce and only gave Eroni a run after every other 13 in NZ was injured.
Hounorable mention Scotty McLeod  - Never lived up to his potential at Test level. I enjoyed watching him play for Waikato though. He could have several guys trying to tackle him and then his long arms would pop out from nowhere to deliver a perfect pass.

Left Wing:
Terry Wright - Quick. Scored a ridiculous number of tries for Auckland. Unfortunately the rules changes in 1992 ended his career early, he didn't have the strength to hold the ball up until support arrives..
Honourable mention Jonah Lomu - Not quite my favourite but very close. The excitement everyone had when a fully fit Jonah got good ball was unforgettable.

Right Wing:
John Kirwan - Big, strong and fast he also threw punches like a girl but it was always entertaining.
Honourable mention Rupeni Caucaunibuca - The anticipation when he got the ball was the closest anyone has come to Lomu

Fullback:
Matt Burke - Like Gregan I tried to dislike this guy.. So skillfull and versatile and by all accounts a great guy off the field. Still enjoy watching him play for Newcastle
Honourable mention Matt Carrington - For only one game.. in fact for one 8min period. He spearheaded a comeback from 29-11 down to win the Ranfurly Shield by a sideline conversion to his own try.

So my favourites team:

1 Steve McDowell
2 Kevin Mealamu
3 Castro-Giovanni
4 Andy Haden
5 Glenn Taylor
6 AJ Whetton
7 Michael Jones
8 Xavier Rush
9 Ofisa Tonu'u
10 Carlos Spencer
11 Terry Wright
12 Frank Bunce
13 Eroni Clarke
14 John Kirwan
15 Matt Burke
