The Other Code gets Willies V3 “Dump of the Week”...
Rugby League in this country has forever had a crap reputation and sadly this past week has been no exception. The code has always been known here as the working class game – or worse a game played and followed by gang members and other low lives. It has forever been in the shadow of Union, in terms of sponsors, playing numbers, club rooms, crowd attendances, community involvement, TV coverage, school participation, refereeing quality, and quality competitions, and this week has seen the Warriors shoot themselves, and league in the foot.
The Warriors administrations through the breach of the salary cap are simply a bloody joke!! I have two issues with this debacle, the first is obviously the total lack of any accountancy skills in this multi-million dollar organization. How hard is it to have a playing roster of 26 players and a cap or budget of $3.6 million dollars AUD? Basic math’s tells Willie they needed to average $138,461 per contracted player and they would be safe, in fact they would have $13.78 left in the bank!! Ok I hear some say, it gets wee bit more complicated with players being signed for different periods 1, 2, 3 years and some on a match by match payment system. The principal stays the same though. The second major issue I have with the Warriors being over the salary cap is simply this – why the hell would they be even close to the limit in the first place with the playing roster they have at the moment? This is the same team less Stacey (whom would have been on plenty) that under performed so badly last year!! Why then would they be at the limit compared to other teams? The surely are paying above market value for some extremely average footballers. For the current board to say oops, sorry but the breaches date back to the Watson error is inexcusable, surely the first thing a board does when it takes over any organization or business is look at the books? I have followed this club since ’95 and been continually frustrated with its performances but for one season. They are seriously harder to support than the Chiefs!! But to now find out they are paid higher than their Aussie competition makes my blood boil!! I hope the ARL deduct the maximum 6 points, effectively meaning the Warriors then would require 34 points to make the play-offs (based on last years points table) It will then either a) make the Warriors play for their money or more likely b) Mean they have no chance and save me the frustration of watching this useless bunch of rabble go around again for another year. The Warriors where probably a fair bet for wooden spoon anyway, to start the season at negative 6 points makes them a great bet!! |
