Hard to pick this time around, with the Crusaders and Blues both demolishing
their throwback opposition in Boerland, and almost to a man in each team playing
superb rugby.
However, up to the task as always, here is the Bart Form XV, Round 2 - if you
missed Round 's version, here it is first...
15 Leon MacDonald
(Crusaders), 14 Anthony Tuitivake (Blues), 13 Casey Laulala (Crusaders), 12
Benson Stanley (Blues), 11 Joe Rokocoko (Blues)10 Nick Evans (Blues), 9 Danny
Lee (Blues), 8 Mose Tuiali'i (Crusaders), 7 Richie McCaw (Crusaders), 6 Jerome
Kaino (Blues), 5 Ali Williams (Crusaders), 4 Jason Eaton (Horrorcanes), 3 Greg
Somerville (Crusaders), 2 Kevin Mealamu (Blues), 1 Tony Woodcock (Blues).
Reserves: Andrew Hore (Horrorcanes), John Afoa (Blues), Troy Flavell (Blues),
Tanerau Latimer (Chiefs), Andy Ellis (Crusaders), Dan Carter (Crusaders), Mils
Muliaina (Chiefs).
And now onto this weeks
Form XV.
15: Leon MacDonald
(Crusaders).
Was not half as good as he was the week before in his 100th game for the
Crusaders, but still twice as good as the next cabs off the rank.
14: Joe Rokocoko
(Blues).
Has taken on the 'elder statesman' role at the Blues like a duck to water.
Now the senior winger with the departure of Sideshow Doug, and has stepped his
game up accordingly.
13: Isaia Toeava
(Blues).
Less errors, more penetration from the young centre. Maybe the Godfather
was right, Toeava will be a star of the RWC, but the 2011 version, not the
2007...
12: Stephen Brett
(Crusaders).
Hell we have Brett and young Benson Stanley from the Blues both on fire at the
moment, and neither would disgrace the black jersey I reckon, and I would not be
surprised if both make the cut come test time. Brett gets the nod this
week, but the width of a gnats pecker.
11: Anthony
Tuitavake (Blues).
I think I like Tui' on the wing more than I like him at centre. This guy
has serious acceleration, an angry man defence that belies his stature, and just
looks hungry for rugby this season. Another that I would not be surprised
to make the AB cut this season (at last some would say), especially with the
ability to cover centre more than adequately.
10: Nick Evans
(Blues).
Superb display of running a match from the pretender to the throne. Like
the selection for second five, this one pretty much a coin toss too between
Carter and Evans. Both players scored a swag of points, ran well, passed
well, kicked for position well. A nice situation to be in at the moment
for the Cartel with Evans in top form, and Carter heading that way rapidly.
9: Danny Lee
(Blues).
Yes, the old man gets the nod, ahead of Andy Ellis. Just razor sharp
clearance of the ball from the base of rucks and mauls, and a few little darts
thrown in, as and when required. IS not playing like a man thrown a
lifeline by the Blues. An integral part of their line-up now. Ellis
sharp again, showing why the Cartel has had faith in him over the last couple of
seasons.
8: Nick Williams
(Blues).
A bulldozer using aviation gas was one comment that I heard about Williams play
at the weekend. The big man is relishing the ELVs, the extra space at
scrum time built for him. Helped no doubt by the platform he is receiving
from his tight five, as you would think Sione Lauaki would be relishing the
extra space too, but when his tight five is constantly reversing over him, it
makes life difficult! But Williams, outstanding 'go forward' in all
aspects of the game, and getting about in the loose too supporting the ball
carrier. Honourable mentions to So'oialo, Setaphano (spelling), and
Tuiali'i (why can't they have names like Jones, Smith and Brown, would be much
easier - perhaps that is why S Jones hates the islanders in the NZ team so much.
Not the poaching, just that the damn names are hard to remember)!!
7: Richie McCaw
(Crusaders).
Took one game, and he's back in top form, linking like a champion, and making a
pain of himself in general for the opposition. Justin Collins went well
too, a close second, and Masoe again pretty good under the new ELVs.
6: Jerome Kaino
(Blues).
The big youngster, getting more and more games under his belt is really starting
to look like a genuine candidate to fil the All Black number 6 jersey this
season. Especially so if Collins does not pull finger. But I can't
really see that happening. Good to have two quality players vying for that
same spot - Kieran Reid was not too shabby either, and big bruiser Adam Thompson
was solid again for the losing Clan.
5: Try Flavell
(Blues).
Just like last season, Flavell looks a world beater again. just last
season he did not transfer that to the All Blacks, and missed the cut for the
All Blacks World Cup sojurn. Mainly because he was played into the ground,
first by Nucifora at the Blues, and then by the Cartel, who were forced to with
the injuries to the locking stocks pre RWC. Anyway, this season, once
again a big dangerous ball running maniac, safe option at lineout time, and
mobile like the 6 that he really is.
4: Brad Thorne
(Crusaders).
OK, so you really would not select Thorne and Flavell in the same pack, as they
are both the same player, just packaged in different bodies. But Thorne
being back in rugby looks like he never left God's code and played a couple of
seasons of Boofball in between. THe heart of the Crusaders pack, hard
working, hard running, just love watching his combination growing with big Ali
Williams. Of the locks, honourable mentions to Haiu, Williams
and Gibbs who all put in top performances, just not top enough to crack the
XV...
3: John Afoa (Blues).
Big John held up against the Biltong Biting Bastards well as the Blues
demolished the fat buggers that pretend to be Super 14 players in the opposition
pack. Still gets out and about with the ball and making tackles, but is at
last maturing nicely into a strong scrummaging tighthead. Honourable
mention to Somerville, who is the reverse of Afoa, bloody good scrummager who at
times struggles around the field - mainly on defence. Touching wood, no
problems this season so far for Yoda!
2: Corey Flynn
(Crusaders).
Another coin toss decision between Flynn and Mealmau, with Hore and his
understudy Hika Elliot a half step behind in the bloody good hooker stakes.
Flynn looking back to his very best though, as when he was that young Southland
bald headed bogan hooker who ran like the wind with the ball in hand. Must
be in with a genuine chance to slot into that All Black squad, especially with
three hookers now the rage. Elliot in his 15 or so minutes looked a real
go-er, if you want impace from a sub, than Elliot at this stage is your man!
His hits on defence were huge (and legal), and if he gets a chance in general
play with the ball, watch him go, he was massive in the NPC last season for
Hawke's Bay.
1: Tony
Woodcock (Blues).
Business as usual for the big unit. Nothing flash, just his 'A' grade game
that he brings to the field all the time. If there was an award for
consistency in performance, Woody would have to get it. Never puts in a
bad one. Honourable mention this week to youngster Jamie MacIntosh who is
handling the pace of Super rugby pretty well I reckon. Also journeyman
prop Simms Davison for the Chiefs, who is one of their tight five performing at
the moment!
Reserves/Substitutes/Whatever: Mealamu (Blues), Somerville (Crusaders),
Haiu (Blues), Tuiali'i (Crusaders), Ellis (Crusaders), Carter (Crusaders), Poki
(Crusaders).
