As BartMan has been having trouble seeing all the games of the Super 14 over the last few weeks, here's some help for him for his selections for the week (two for each position) Not in any order, just the two best...
Loosehead: Crockett, Dermody Tighthead: Somerville, Hayman Hard to gauge really because apart from the Crusaders none of the others were up against strong props, but the solidity of the Highlanders scrum was a massive bonus to them throughout.
Hooker: Flynn, Oliver Flynn seemed to resort to a flatter, quicker throw than he's been using this season and as a result was picked off a bit by the Bulls getting up quick in front of his jumpers. Around the field he was great, into everything and backing up well. Oliver was part of a good unit, but I will never trust his throwing again.
Locks: Jack, Upton, Thorne, Kane Thompson Good work had by all.
Openside: Holah, Latimer All good shit
Blindside: Leo'o, Highlanders blindside (Hoani?) All part of the silent service that is good blindside play.
No 8: Tuiali'i, Bates Could have given one of these spots to Newby but Bates did quite well, especially after looking like his shoulder had been demolished.
Halfback: Kelleher, Ellis I thought Cowan had a good game actually, but these two did exactly what was needed when it was needed, although Kelleher was wobbly for the first hour, he came right for the last 20.
1st 5: Hill, Carter Steady as you need from both of them, no panic, no charge downs, no dramas really and Carter silenced the Loftus crowd which is near impossible for any other player today.
2nd 5: Sammy T, Mauger Two players from different 2nd 5 moulds but both equally as effective. Mauger had the big Bulls running at him and put them all down bar none while in Hamilton Sammy was bludgeoning through the much hyped tahs defence with low body position and sheer bloody mindedness.
Centre: Casey, Brew Was worried about Casey before the game but he got past his first tackler with every touch and that was what won them the game, getting over the gain line and giving your pack a target to run to rather than them having to turn. Brew kept Mortlock largely contained and I couldn't bring myself to opt for Ranby, not only on principle, but also on his first half.
Left wing: Big Joe, Ralph Sivivatu just went missing too many times for me, not that Rocks was ultravisible all game either mind you. Ralph made ground almost every time he got the ball and body checked well too...
Right wing: Rico, Tahana Rico had a strong, if not spectacular game, he hasn't scored the tries this year that he did last year, but he's set up a big chunk of ours. Always asks his marker huge questions and is a terrier on defence. I don't rate Tuqiri, but Tahana kept him muted almost all night and if he hadn't passed to Turunui would have been credited with setting up the winning try.
Fullback: Rangi, Mils Two great players playing great code, different skills, different ideas, same result.
Coach of the week: Robbie... |
