Just wondering if there was a direct quote available on the internet or elsewhere where Graham Henry actually uttered these words to the world?
I'm not doubting he may have said it, but I have never been able to find anything resembling this anywhere. He certainly was focussed on the world cup this year, but every year and every series (ie: Lions, Grand Slam) there was always a focus on winning the next test in front of the team.
If the team had lost every single test or most tests from 2004 to 2007 yet won the quarter-final, would Henry have been retained? Or even survived to 2007? I think not. Which is why I can't believe why some people are saying that the previous years tests were against weak opposition and that Henry was totally and overwhelmingly and irrationally thinking too much about the world cup.
I especially enjoyed the demolition of the Lions, the demolition of all teams British and Irish in the Grand Slam tour, the destruction of France (6 Nations Champions) at home in 2004 and 2006. ALL the tri-nations tests were against quality opposition until this year's South Africa B in Chch. People seem to forget how hard it is to still win in South Africa (Australia rarely do it, even in their heyday in 1999-2003).
People say that his Welsh record was shit. Ok, Wales got hammered towards the end of his tenure. However, lets not forget that under him, Wales beat South Africa for the first time in their history in 1999. Not even the 'great' 1970s welsh sides could do that. The Welsh side also had an unbelievable run into the 1999 world cup, coming off 11 straight victories, including beating England at wembley. I remember quite well the flat backline used by Wales that year. The Welsh 'b' team got annihilated 98-3 by South Africa in 1998, and the welsh had been crap since 1987.
The thing that really shits me though is people saying the Lions series in 2001 was a failure for Henry against ...."a weak Australian side". WHAT?!? WTF?? A 'WEAK' Australian side??? That Rod McQueen wallaby side was one of, if not the best Australian side ever put onto the field thank you very much you weekend columnist twats. The 2001 All Blacks couldn't beat them at home or away. In fact 2001 All Blacks were the FIRST All Blacks side to LOSE to the Wallabies in Dunedin. The 2000 All Blacks lost the Bledisloe to them. The 1999 All Blacks also got walloped in Sydney by them. Don't forget also that the majority of this 2001 australian team won the world cup in 1999 and also beat South Africa at home in 2000 for the first time since 1992.
I think the Lions did bloody well to beat the Wallabies in Brisbane in 2001. They were very unlucky to lose the third test in Sydney. All this whilst senior players were writing columns in newspapers actively trying to undermine the team. So what if that was the first time Australia had beaten the Lions in a series. It was a bloody good Australian team. I also think the 2001 Lions would've demolished the rabble that came to NZ in 2005.
(Henry was interviewed on BSport this morning and they asked him about that quote and he said something along the line of "sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment but in hindsight it was probably the wrong thing to say". Paraphrased obviously but, he certainly didn't deny saying it). - Redeye
