Kiwi Form XV : Week 5 Print E-mail

Simms Davison : Photosport.co.nzWell no one stepped into the breach for me to name last weeks team while I was swaning off in Fiji, so 'last weeks' form players are in fact the week before, but really, who gives a continentals about that, although I watched the Crusaders v Blues game from week 4, and geez, Leon MacDonald was on fire on the counter attack wasn't he, scary.  This week however sees the Blues with the bye, so the form team selected from the Chiefs v Crusaders game, the Highlanders v the Bulls, and Hurricanes v Stormers.

15:  Leon McDonald (Crusaders).  Solid at the back this week, not as exciting as his Blues performance the week before, but won the battle against his All Black rival Muliaina.

Last week:  Isaia Toeava (Hurricanes).

14:  Rico Gear (Crusaders).  Steady as she goes for the continually improving Gear.  Limited opportunities for the flying wingman this week, but his run and link with Mose Tuiali'i for the match winner against the Chiefs was a pretty handy lesson in changing of angles to beat tacklers!
Last week:  Rico Gear (Crusaders).

13:  Caleb Ralph (Crusaders).  Steady as she goes for the 1998 All Black centre.  Is looking a far better player in midfield than on the wing.  Like most players in the midfield, improving with age, and keeping another former All Black in Laulala on the bench too.
Last week:  Casey Laulala (Crusaders).

12:  Sam Tuitupou (Chiefs).
Slammin Sammy the form 12 of the Super 12 I reckon, solid in all he does, attack and defence.  Playing to the sort of form that saw him win an All Black jersey a couple of seasons back.
Last week:  Seilala Mapusua (Highlanders).

11:  Sitivini Sivivatu (Chiefs).  Injury free, and looking scary again.  Throw him on the back of a  Crusaders bcakline, and you could seriously scare people.  Or in a jersey coloured all black.
Last week:  Sitivini Sivivatu (Chiefs).

10:  Dan Carter (Crusaders).  Betterer and betterer, I know, no such word, but this is D Carter, who in the words of the Rugby Almanac has only one thing standing between him and greatness, and that is time.
Last week:  Dan Carter (Crusaders).

9:  Piri Weepu (Hurricanes).  Best of an average bunch this week, not on the top of his game though, mind you, his tight five were about as effective a condom that has been put through a blender prior to use...
Last week:  Piri Weepu (Hurricanes).

8:  Mose Tuiali'i (Crusaders).  What a game from the hard running number eight, just reveling in being injury free (hope this doesn't jinx him) and playing better and better each week.  Was powering through a ton of work in the tight, and still enough energy to have a hand in two tries, scoring the second himself.  Will certainly have made the Cartel stand up and take note.
Last week:  Rodney So'oialo (Hurricanes).

7:  Marty Holah (Chiefs).  Outplayed McCaw, which says it all.  Always raises to the challenge though when confronted by top opendsiders.  One of the better running games with the ball for a long while (Lions last season perhaps), and is looking good.
Last week:  Richard McCaw (Crusaders).

6:  Jerry Collins (Hurricanes).  Continues to bash his way through all 'n' sundry, getting better and better.  If this is a one dimensional player, can we have some more please?  Massive performances week in and week out.
Last week:  Troy Flavell (Blues).

5:  Chris Jack (Crusaders).  The big man performing week in and week out, and get the nod over Ryan the penalty magnet this week.  Jack is putting in performances that must have the Cartel's collective mouths watering.
Last week:  James Ryan (Highlanders).

4:  Jono Gibbes (Chiefs).  Huge game from the Chiefs captain, and a reminder to the Cartel that he is still around, and an ideal lock / tight flanker benchman.  Should have been leading the Chiefs to a hard won win over the champion Crusaders, but for some donkey TMO decisions, and some shite kicking, once again, from Mr S Donald.
Last week:  Jason Eaton (Hurricanes).

3:  Carl Hayman (Highlanders).  Like Jerry Collins, week in and week out outstanding for the Highlanders, best in New Zealand by a long way.
Last week:  Carl Hayman (Highlanders).

2:  Corey Flynn (Crusaders).  If he keeps playing like this will certainly be in contention for an All Black jersey this season, still behind Oliver and Mealamu, but closing the gap fast, and streets ahead of Hore and Willis at the moment.
Last week:  Anton Oliver (Highlanders).

1:  Simms Davison (Chiefs).  At last nearing the NPC form of 2004 that saw him getting whispered in dispatches in the same sentence as the words 'All Black tourist'.  Had a hua of a battle with All Black Greg Somerville as the Chiefs lost to the Crusaders
Last week:  Greg Somerville (Crusaders).
