Everyone has included a few of the mighty ABs in their team and with good reason but I thought I would choose a "best of the rest". Some of the guys mentioned are world class players, some are just guys I have admired over the years. Here goes...
15 Gavin Hastings ( Scotland )
As some have mentioned before a true legend who completely won me over when he visited my college in 93. Bloody nice fella and great player in his day. Had the "heart of an All Black" according to Sean Fitzy !!
Honourable mentions
Chris Latham ( Australia ) Thinus Delport ( South Africa )
14 Emile Ntamack ( France )
Carved the AB's up on a few occasions and had a great swerve and fend. Not as big as Jonah but capable of running over guys when the mood took him !!
Honourable mentions
David Campese ( Australia ) James Small ( South Africa )
13 Scott Gibbs ( Wales )
Nicknamed "Car Crash" for good reason, in fact if memory serves me correctly he laid out numbers 7 and 1 from my team back in the 97 lions series !!! about as wide as he was tall...
Honourable mentions
Alan Tait ( Scotland ) Stirling Mortlock ( Australia )
12 Yannick Jauzion ( France )
Big tall dude with all the time in the world to run and pass it seemed. Has never played well against the AB's ( luckily !! )
Honourable mentions
Will Greenwood ( England ) Brian Lima ( Samoa )
11 Rupeni Caucau ( Fiji )
A bit fat nowadays maybe and certainly prone to attacks of the munchies but has quite simply scored some of the most amazing tries I have ever seen
Honourable mentions
Gareth Thomas ( Wales ) Ben Cohen ( England )
10 Henry Honiball ( South Africa )
Strong runner, good passer and certainly no Mehrts/O’Gara/Fox in defence either. Redefined 1st five play.
Honourable mentions
Freddy Michelak ( France ) Neil Jenkins ( Wales )
9 Gary Armstrong ( Scotland )
Always looked like he’d been boxing after a game, not playing rugby. Rugged little player.
Honourable mentions
Rob Howley ( Wales ) Peter Stringer ( Ireland )
8 Lawrence Dallaglio ( England )
A true Warrior and frightening off the back of the scrum, beast of a man
Honourable mentions
Scott Quinnell ( Wales ) Sebastian Chabal ( France )
7 Andre Venter ( South Africa )
Huge hard man, seemed to be everywhere and comfortable running with the backs or being a forward.
Honourable mentions
Schalk Burger ( South Africa ) Neil Back ( England )
6 Jason White ( Scotland )
Great with ball in hand but hes in my team cos he can make tackles that would make Jerry Collins wince !! 3rd part of the scariest loose trio of all time !!!
Honourable mentions
John Jeffrey ( Scotland ) Matt Cockbain ( Australia )
5 Johann Ackermann ( South Africa )
Another huge scary man, should have had a much longer career if not for the drugs scandal. Gotta admire a guy that age making a comeback !!
Honourable mentions
Doddie Weir ( Scotland ) Jerome Thion ( France )
4 John Eales ( Australia )
Need a nice guy in the team to counteract the previous four mentioned and prevent a possible death on the pitch !! Also a fantastic player as we all know.
Honourable mentions
Martin Johnson ( England ) Danny Grewcock ( England )
3 Jason Leonard ( England )
I freely admit to knowing nothing about front rowers but he played a lot of tests and seemed like a character, that’ll do for me…
Honourable mentions
Phil Vickery ( England ) Any Argentinean front rower !!
2 Keith Wood ( Ireland )
Ran like a back and didn’t shirk his work in the tight ( so I’m told )
Honourable mentions
Richard Cockerill ( England ) Freddy Mendez ( Argentina )
1 Os Du Randt ( South Africa )
For exactly the same reason I picked Leonard….
Honourable mentions
Peter Fatialofa ( Samoa ) David Sole ( Scotland )
