Saffer View Round 8 Print E-mail
Written by PaarlBok
Sunday, 25 March 2007
Another great weekend of rugby and cricket. Get a bit confused which one to look at on Saturday night. Two surprises this weekend. First the Bulls getting a historical three out of four tour win and then the fall of the Sharks by a Brumbie team blowing hot and cold. Just when you think they are down and out, they hit back. If the Bulls can klap the Canes this weekend they are surely semi contenders and maybe even a Bull Ring one. The tour record for the Saffers is a 7 out of 14. The highest so far in history. Next week the Sharks and Cheetahs starts their tours and I have full confidence in them to keep this up. They are usually the best travellers.

Boer Calculator for semi contenders:
I have to decided to break the S14 log in three catogories. The seriously, desperate and wooden spoon contenders.

The wooden spooners is the goner teams, no change to make the semis. After round 8 we have only two of them. The Reds and Waratahs is here.

The desperates is the ones that can afford one or two more losses. The teams in order of merit here are the Cheetahs, Clan, Brumbies, Canes and Stormers.

The favourate are those who I think are  the favourates to make it. The teams in order of merit are the Lions, Force, Sharks, Bulls, Chiefs, Blues and Saders.

This will play a huge role in the outcome of matches because from this week on the desperates usual clip the favourates, like we have seen with the Brumbies vs Sharks clash.

After this round the All Blacks showed a shortage of match sharpness and it will take one more week when we can expect their full force.

The weekend Saffer games:

Clan vs Bulls
This one I had completely wrong. The Bulls forwards took control of this game and bully them to a victory. Clinical forwards rugby we know they can produce and a welcome profit. A historical third victory for them and a supposed tour of hell already turned in a historical victory one.  One more important game and they can start looking at home semis.

Saders vs Stormers
The result don’t showed true value about the Stormers effort. They gave the Saders a game and something to think about. They also gave the big All Black names a warm Boere welcome to the 2007 S14 competition. For the Saders I think Carter once again showed his class. That chrp kicking was class and he kept Grant and Barry busy. The forwards did not impress that much and the usual clinical Sader finish did the business. For the Stormers I thought big Andries Bekker showed he is on the way to green.  Melck had a big game. Barry and Schalkie showed a bit of no nonsense which was good. I am still waiting to see the youngster des Fountain in 13 and look busy as we know. Anyway a game the Saders never in danger to loose but also a game they don’t deserve the bonus point try. Hopefully the Stormers will have a weeks rest and show some more guts at Newlands, to get the supporters behind them.

Sharks vs Brumbies
This was the game in which everything went wrong for the Sharks. They could not get anything right. However big credit to the Brumbies for pitching up for this one and show glimses of the golden Brumbie era. Saturday surely a black day for SA and a golden one for the Aussies. Even the cricket went their way.

Lions vs Hurricanes
History for the Lions and old Cats again. First time they get back from a tour and start a home game with a victory. I expected this and full value to Loffy. Finally this is a Lions team getting rid of the Cats failures. The way the Lions adopt to the bitching ref help them. The Canes could not and at the end look in complete disarray. They will have to turn things around and don’t have it easy arriving at home against the Bully Boys.

So there we have it. A 2-1 victory for the Saffers over the Kiwis, a 1-0 victory for the Aussies over the Saffers and a 1-0 victory fir the Kiwis over the Aussies. A really mix bag and everyone happy.
