With the first test against he 'Olde Foe' coming up this weekend, I thought it would be a good time to go back and look at the last ten results, and check out all the stats 'n' things. Where better to look then at the best damn website for All Black stats on the web, www.rugbymuseum.co.nz?
As per usual, the site does not let you down, every time you hit that site there are more stats about more things than even the most avid train spotter would want.
First though, the last ten results - click on the date and be taken to the museum site for the team lists and match details / report.
Other interesting points to raise - the All Blacks longest winning streak has been 8 games, to the Boers 6. Highest winning margins are 36 and 17 respectively, and the points racked up against each other 55 and 46 - the 46 being the most points that the All Blacks have ever conceded in a test match. On that point, I think it would be safe to say that the All Blacks are the only team in the history of the game not to have conceded 50 points in a match. As a side not, in that 46 point match, we damn near won it, scoring 40 points in that loss!
The head to head now favours the All Blacks 38-29, although it was only in about 1992 (from memory) when we finally broke even in the win / loss department. The last few years have been a bit closer again, the Men in Black finding it harder to win on the Republic than usual, although they broke the Cartel's duck last season. The Boers on the other hand have not won in New Zealand since November, 1999.
Individually, Christian Cullen, with 10 tries against Joe Rokocoko with 8 tries is the all time leading All Black try scorer against the Boers. He leads some pretty handy names here, and will probably be overtaken by one of them before the end of his career. Joe Rokocoko has 8 tries on his ledger at the moment, and Doug Howlett 5. Howlett's five tries puts him equal with some All Black greats Justin Marshall (yes, despite his pass having the pace of a Skoda in the King of the Mountain race, he is a great), and Jeff Wilson. A strong bunch of players there, all up there with the best to have pulled on black jerseys in anger.
Dan Carter has moved into second spot in the individual scoring charts, but is still 123 points behind Andrew Mehrtens who leads the way with 209 points against the Seth Efricans. Cullen with his 10 tries, and Rokocoko with his 8 are 4th and 5th on the scoring charts, separated by the leading two by another pretty handy player in his time, Carlos Spencer. Spencer scored more than half his 84 points in just two games, and is first and third on the highest individual match scoring against the green 'n' golds.
Anyway, enough already - go to this page Rugby Museum Stats Page - All Blacks v South Africa and check out all the stats for yourselves.
What does all this history tell us for this weekends game - nothing. As history is just that, history. All that will matter is the 80 minutes on the battlefield of Durban this Saturday - I can't wait!
