Team Haggis - who's who? Print E-mail

In the absence of someone who may actually know what they're talking about, I've taken it upon myself to talk up some of the players from the land of my heritage, who will be taking on the All Blacks first up in Great Britain.

That's right it's our kilted brotherhood so I'll cast my less than expert eye over a few of them, and give my opinion.  I'll also add a column 'if he were a New Zealander' ( IHWANZer) with my opinion of how far he would have gone rugby wise in our proud land....

A few names are missing but rather than make up a whole bunch of bullshit and risk being caught out (and the fact I wrote a whole lot about them, our system crashed and I lost it ) I won’t bother..

Mike Blair – The captain and a snappy passing, snappy running old school style player, not as physical as Weepu/Cowan but still sharp at what he does. One guy who will be hoping his name is read out on the Lions tour next year.
IHWANZer – This dude is better than Ellis so ergo, he would have been capped by the Abs ( although hard to see it )

Rory Lamont - Probably a tad better than his brother truth be told. Big, strong, fast, aggressive....everything needed as a modern winger nowadays. Exciting with ball in hand which is not something associated with Scottish Wingers and surely a shoe in for the Lions tour next year. Late tackled someone once and the gifted touch judge sent his brother off instead. Mind you at least the dumb fuck got the family member right, Tamati Ellison got sent off for something Hosea Gear did this year if I recall correctly !
IHWANZer - Caleb Ralph and Scott Hamilton were ABs, this guy is a damn sight better than them so would win a few caps if the usual suspects were injured/out of form

Thom Evans – More of a pretty boy than the Lamonts but they can actually play. The jury is still out on this fella. I have only included him because prior to being a pro rugby player he was in a boy band opening for Westlife. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm hardly the most rugged preparation for a date with the MIB.
IHWANZer – well the chicks would dig him, not sure about his playing ability.

Sean Lamont - See Rory Lamont except this dude likes to pose semi nude in centurion leather outfits....hmmmmmmmm, sounds like he's been hanging with too many French players. Probably a tiny bit less dynamic as discussed but still a damn sight better than most Northern hemisphere wingers. You'd think he would be packing his bags for SA next year as well, hopefully he remembers some boardies or at least some speedos.....
IHWANZer - see R Lamont. He wouldn't disgrace any Super 14 squad and would look good latching onto a Smith/Kahui pass at the end of the line

Graeme Morrison - Typical dimensions for a Scottish 12 at a Mortlock like 1.91m and 105 odd kilos. Like many guys before him he is good at hitting it up in traffic however the Morty comparisons end when it comes to dynamism, he looks a bit one paced and leaden footed to me.
IHWANZer - solid Super 14 journeyman, would lack the pace and ball skills to step up.

Dan Parks - The Stephen Donald to Patersons Dan Carter in the "have to include this guy even though he sux compared to the incumbent" kind of way. However If DC > CP by that token NZ > Scotland and Donald ( with all his faults ) > Parks then Scotland are pretty rooted especially given that this dude will most likely start at 10 and CP will be on the wing for FB. An absolute mystery how he has won so many caps....
IHWANZer - This guy makes Jimmy Gopperth look like Dan Carter.

Chris Paterson - with all the bitching and moaning DC did about having to play 12 against Oz he should really stop and have a think about dead eye dick Chris Paterson who has been fucked about with damn near his whole Scottish career. Not saying CP is a patch on DC at his best but by Scottish standards he is, probably as good a player as Nick Evans truth be told, such a shame he is stuck as a winger or fullback really. Whichever way you look at it an awesome goal kicker better than DC or Wilkinson even, no shit !
IHWANZer - would have been identified as a talent, remained at 1st five and been a capable understudy for the likes of DC, Spencer and Mehrts over the years.....

Ross Ford – The brickshithouse front rower is being mentored by Sean Fitzy so he's obviously highly rated. Is also being talked up as a potential Lion so that’s gotta be good.
IHWANZer – you’d imagine he’d piss into most Super 14 squads at the very least.

Dougie Hall – Including this guy cos my cousins went to school with him. Unfortunately they’re not writing about him so anything meaningful ends here.
IHWANZer – Scotlands third choice hooker so you’d think ANZ cup at best.

Jim Hamilton – Huge, huge lock about 2.08 and looks like he has a bit of weight. Looks about as mobile and dynamic as Herman Munster so for that reason I think he struggles a bit and may get the run around from our guys.
IHWANZer – Super 14 at absolute best, mind you Kevin O’neill got a cap. Actually naaaaaaaaa……

Nathan Hines – the big Aussie has been around for awhile and shows no signs of letting up. Definitely more visible around the field when he has his Hayman like beard, surely a must for any serious tight forward. A good honest grunter who doesn’t let the team down.
IHWANZer – Well Rawlinson got a cap or two so a flip of the coin may have got Hines one or two as well

Allister Hogg – A bit of a Masoe type in that he can play all three loose forward positions fairly well. Good at everything without being great. Mobile and aggressive at the breakdown. Works well with Taylor and White.
IHWANZer – Super 14 definitely. AB’s ? maybe if there were a few injuries.

Allan Jacobsen – 120kg, but not a Sheriden 120kg more like a “get this guy on downsize me” 120kg. Looks very out of condition and unfit compared to a lot of props. ( except the two muppets from Wales )
IHWANZer – you’d think an ANZ cup side would tell him to piss of and tone up

Matt Mustchin - A former Crusader. I knew I recognised that name ( if not the face ). Not too sure about his play as I tended to drink a hell of a lot more in the days when he graced the Super stage. That and I knew even less about tight forwards than I do now.
IHWANZer - well given that he IS this is fairly easy. I'd say he would have gone as far as he could and then fucked off overseas to qualify for another team.

Alasdair Strokosch - Haven't seen this dude play much at all but he has a nice chrome dome in the tough Keith Robinson "don't fuck with me" vein as opposed to the Marc Ellis "I got pissed and shaved my head and now I look ridiculous" vein. In fact he looks like strickland from back to the future, hope he doesn't tolerate "slackers" in the pack.
IHWANZer - no idea.

Simon Taylor – Talked up as the best Scottish loosie of his generation. I’d give that title to the man below but there y’go. Effective runner but one who constantly breaks down with injuries as TWO lions tours ( but only half a game ) would attest.
IHWANZer – Well overrated as he is I’d say he's better than Bates and Broomhall so would have got a few caps.

Jason White - Gotta love this big hard man. I'd defy anyone now that JC has retired to find a harder tackler. An inspirational leader and ball carrier he is a take no prisoners enforcer for the Scots. Lets face it they have few others. His Scottish accent meant he missed the Lions tour he deserved in 05 but there's always next year ! Did I mention he's a really hard tackler ? very good at cutting guys in half….
IHWANZer - woulda got a few AB caps for sure, perhaps as a Brad Thorn type lock even though he plays mainly at six.
