Really enjoyed the game over the
weekend and in particular had to help myself to some humble pie with regards to
a certain Ma'a Nonu.
26 years old - with 22 caps - and a
long line of critics.
I've been one of them for a while -
recognizing Nonu mainly for his ability to hold the ball, run fast for a short
while, then fall over in the tackle and lose the ball. Also known more for his
grooming habits and his attitude around town.
One of my abiding memories of him is
from several years back when he was protesting a call to the ref - with the
classic schoolboy retort - "It wasn't me ref." - despite the replay clearly
showing it was. I recall thinking "Grow up man - get on and play the game."
Has always had talent, speed and
physical presence to make a difference, but as has been said here it appears
this year his brain is now in gear - and what a difference it is making. The
backline looks and feels settled, is functioning as a solid wall on defence and
literally exploding in attack, when needs demand it.
For lack of a better phrase - Nonu is
playing as part of a team - allowing his skills to be used within that team. He
is better for it. And the All Blacks are better for it. Dan Carter's quote on
allblacks.com says a lot about the new Nonu:
"The whole backline is looking for
space. It starts with the wingers and it gets relayed into myself. I think Ma'a
[Nonu] has really progressed in that area, he has become very vocal and given me
a lot of options so that's a great part of his game that has really improved and
it's making my job a lot easier," he said.
It's early doors on the 2008 season -
and he may make mistakes as the season winds on - which will get critiqued till
early doors. But I'll put my hand up and state for the record - Mr Nonu, as a
fan - I salute you. Well done.
