The Silverfern Spotlight : TaniwhaRugby Print E-mail
Written by TaniwhaRugby

taniwhaOne of the originals, TR was hanging around annoying people back before the forum was up and running in its current format.  That was the good old days when you didn't need moderation, trolls were things from fairy tales, and South Africans had not yet discovered computers...  TR is one of the moderators on the forum, not of the super grumpy variety, more of the common garden variety...

Forum member number 8.

Describe yourself in 25 words or less: Auckland born, but escaped at an early age. Loyal family man. Am one of the longest suffering/celebrated Mods... am addicted to TSF

What international rugby team do you support and why?  NZ - it's in my genes, if I had to choose another, it would be the Haggis Munchers by default of my Ancestry.

What Super 14 team do you support and why?  Blues - by default. Live in Whangarei, and as they are supposed to be our franchise 'partner'

What's the biggest challenge facing rugby?  Maintaining a credible International game; NZ's challenge is keeping players in NZ, if we can do this, the grassroots problems will start to sort itself out

Who was the game's greatest ever player?  Read/archives - Meads. Watched - Michael Jones, anticipation, power, speed, defence, skills, he simply had it all.

How about non-NZ players?  Who were/are the greatest? Read/Archived - Frik Du Preez, Willie John McBride. Watched - Blanco, and that bloody Gregan.

The best match you have ever seen?  For sheer excitement, Sydney 2000, NZ - Wallabies, 39-35. For a game that seemed to be almost perfect, 1996, Wellington, NZ - Aus, 43-6, brilliant rugby in the conditions.

The best try you have ever seen?  As a Cullen fan, it had to be his effort vs Aus in Dunedin 1997, taking a long cut out pass just outside the 22 from Zinzan, while he only beat 3 defenders to get there, the way he turned Gregan (in his day, one of the best cover defenders in the business) inside out made it special.

What position did you play, if you played, in rugby?  I played my early years as a halfback (cos I was a midget as a nipper) I was never really one of those ones who taunted the opposition and then hid behind the tight 5. As I got older (and bigger) I realised that my game was best suited to the forwards, so became a blindside flanker, plus my coaches kept telling me off for getting involved in rucks all the time and leaving the ball there for someone else to pass/steal! Have managed to play every position from lock to fullback (only played lock in Golden Oldies scrums)

What do you like about the Silverfern? The banter, majority of the posters seem like great people, genuine rugby fans. The fact you can meet people off the internet, and not feel weird - yeah right.

How could the site be improved?  Banning Dodge! Seriously, not much, have been a Ferner for nearly 10 years now, and have seen it evolve into what must surely be the top rugby forum around.

Who's your favourite poster?  Not sure really, don't really have a favorite, but I have met a number of posters and had a beer or three with them and are top blokes.

Who's the worst poster?  Probably Fester the Mullet, his condescending know-it-all attitude to everything. Also a special mention to Dodge for his constant denials that England is not the devil!

How did you pick your user name?  Well it started as Team Rebel (worked as Dept. Manager at Rebel Sport) which was my Team name in Fantasy F1 when it was run through Rivals, which was also how I found the worlds biggest time waster, TSF. Then as the years crept by, I thought something more inline with my Northland support - taniwharugby - for obvious reasons It helped that people used to call me TR still call me TR (I ignore all other names)

How could the game of rugby be improved?  Allow rucking, would make a lot of these other more complicated rules obsolete.

What rugby player would you turn gay for?  Well if Bart was still playing....

Non-rugby questions now:

Favourite music?  Pretty much anything

Favourite book?  Um, only book I have read more than 1 time would be Lord of the Rings, so would have to be that.

Favourite Film?  Standard answer, probably Shawshank Redemption, will watch that almost anytime it is on TV (despite owning it on DVD and never watching it)!  Happy Gilmore is another fave!!

Biggest lifetime regret?  Giving up rugby at 18 to take golf up seriously on the suggestion of my golf coach; then seeing a number of guys from my 1st 15 days go on to carve out NPC, Super 14 or AB careers while my golf 'career' reached it's peak by making the NZ amateur, spiralled downward when realising I needed to get a job.

Greatest hope? That my kids have a passion for life and sports as I do; If you have a healthy sporting life, you will have a healthy life.
