The Silverfern Spotlight : Willie the Weka Print E-mail
Written by Willie the Weka
Wednesday, 06 August 2008
wekaYet another of the rabid Mooloo fans on the website.  Although, there is a rumour that he donned the gold and blue of Bay of Plenty during an unsuccessful Shield Challenge a season or three back.  That rumour aside, Weka is a devout fan of the Grant Fox school of tackling, and a proud wearer of the same numbered jersey over his playing days.  Also has scored a try in an NPC final, a few years ago now - as the saying goes, "Good days, good days"...

Joined March 11, 2003, and would have to be one of the longest lasting members with the least amount of posts - which many posters could learn from.  If you have nothing to say on a topic, then say it!!  Don't just post for the farking sake of it...

Forum Member number 90.

Myself:  Down to earth, quick witted, sports fanatic, over competitive, fat bald bloke.

Int’l team: All Blacks. My home, my country –simple

S14: Chiefs. My home, my province – simple

Biggest Challenge: Professionalism and linking back to club’s. Rugby used to be a religion. All kids wanted to be an AB. They started playing at 5 in bare feet and retired at 35, then went into coaching / administration. They where happy to get to what ever level they where selected for and stayed loyal to their province / club. “Poaching players” was frowned upon. They played for their club, sub union, province, and if good enough AB’s. If not they just played club footy for the A’s, B’s, reserves, 21’s etc.

Greatest Player: In my time, would have to be M N Jones. A truly “great” player, skill, speed, physical presence, and heart.

Non Kiwi’s: John Eales, Serge Blanco, Naas Botha.

Best Match: First ever first division final Waikato V Otago, Rugby Park, watching from the terraces with my Dad. Amazing atmosphere, the colour, the bells, the Mooloo chants pre any loud speaker assistance, the result.

Best try: Have to be J Lomu’s last minute effort V Aussie, pass from T Randall tip toe down the sideline and beat G Gregan’s cover.
Actually that J Wilson non try would have made this award if not for “that tackle”

Position: First Five / Fullback. Goal kicker in every team I ever played in.

Like about the fern: My mate runs it.

Fav poster: Read Beard, Good man, knowledgeable, passionate.

Worst: No one really springs to mind.

Username: Started on the fern while living in Gisborne, and Willie the Weka is the Bay’s masgot.

Improve Game: Bring back rucking, yip it hurt – (well it did the two times I was stupid enough to get caught in them), but bodies got cleared and the quick ball was fantastic for backs to sight and run onto and score try’s off. The slow ball now allows too much defensive organisation time.

Turn Gay for: The next AB to score the winning try, penalty, conversion or drop goal (yes drop goal) in a RWC final.

Fav Music: varied but always always loved Bob Marley.

Fav Book: Enjoying reading Freedom Writers at the moment.

Fav Film: Shawshank Redemption.

Biggest regret: Not having the “courage” to nail a babe I had had the meanest crush on right through High School, the opportunity came one night when dropping the lads off after a party as the non sober driver, she was last in the car and after dropping the last guy off she asked while sitting the back seat, “where to now driver” and I bloused out and said “ umm home” what a pussy!!

Greatest hope: That my 3 son’s get as much enjoyment and great memories playing sport, and make as many life long friendships as I have had through this game of rugby.
