I am writing this after just watching the French beat the Irish in a very boring game of rugby. But that win has firmed up the likelihood of a AB v France quarter final, you see I cannot see Ireland beating Argentina. I am not that happy about this, and I had a horrible flashback. Not to previous World Cups, my medication is working on those, but to a bad day in the Cake Tin, when Jonah Lomu was forced to try and rescue a NZ 7s team in a quarter final game against the Fijians. He came up ten centimetres short just as the final whistle blew.
You see this is the thing about upsets. I recall sitting in the
Cake Tin on the day before this fateful quarter final, and I screamed
with the rest of the stadium as Fiji were upset in a pool game, I don't
even remember who beat them, but man was I pumped. It was exciting "go
the under dog". Then as day two of the sevens started I recall reading
the draw for the quarters. I was in that zone between hangover and not
quite drunk again phase, that usually last from about 11:00 to 1:00 on
the second day. Anyway, NZ as winners of their pool was scheduled to
play Fiji, who had only managed second in their pool, after the UPSET I
had screamed for.
Well the rest is history, we lost that quarter final, and with that
initial loss motivating them, the Fijians won the cup. NZ went on to
fail further in the bowl, upset at their early demise from the cup.
The thing was the NZ team was playing well, and even that quarter
final loss to Fiji was an "only just" affair. But because Fiji had
decided to play like school kids, and because we (the Wellington crowd)
had cheered on their opposition, the UPSET of fate, had occurred and it
didn't impact on the Fijians, it impacted upon the NZ team.
So this morning I sat there and reflected about that game, the game
where I sat and watched the Argentinian side UPSET the French, I recall
the joy I felt, the excitement of watching the under dog win. I recall
that love for the UPSET.
But of course now I look at that quarter final, in Cardiff, and I
think to myself, we are likely to be playing France there... and you
know what damn I hate upsets
