I mean it, if you thought we (England) were shit after
the last world cup, and if you think the 6N teams were a flop in the WC, you
ain't seen nothing yet. I reckon that next years 6N could be one of the worst
quality tournaments in living memory. The rankings that came out today I fully
expect to be totally meaningless come next season, I think the ABs will get
better, and the rest of the world will get worse.
England:
Our best hope is to get a decent coach who's allowed to pick his own coaching
team and can coach a more complete game of rugby. Given the number of players
that are old and potentially retiring I really worry about what we'll be like
next year - some of the 'biggest' players for England in this world cup were
Gommersall, Shaw, Regan, Vickery, Corry, Catt, Robinson et al I can't see them
lasting much longer. There is no doubt we have some decent young talent around
but they will be very green and liable to make mistakes. I worry about the
reports that have come out of the England training squad pre world cup and
during.
Our forward pack will not be as strong next year and I worry about Ashton's
ability as head coach. We will need to play more rugby and I'm not sure our
organisation will be good enough to cope with that. I hope Ellis comes back to
his best and continues to learn, we saw what a difference a decisive 9 made.
Ireland:
Under EOS, they totally flopped this WC, I worry that they peaked last year and
that they will probably lose some of their more influential players. Their pack
looks past it and I don't see that many youngsters available to fill their
shoes.
Wales:
Organisation is in a shambles after sacking Ruddock, whoever comes in has to
break the players strangle hold on the team and make them more professional in
their approach. They still lack a strong enough pack to trouble the top teams
in the world. They will potentially lose Thomas and a few others, that will
leave a big hole IMO.
Scotland:
They didn't play any real rugby this year and looked pedestrian in most of their
games in the WC, they stand the best chance of the home nations to take the next
step IMO but I'm not convinced they will
France:
Who knows, without Laporte will they be able to regain some of the ability to
throw the ball around or is it too late for their current generation? They need
to find a 10 who can control and break a game. They have a lot of very very
good young players, it will be interesting to see how the new coach copes with
that. I think St Andre is the best bet personally.
Italy:
Just rubbish this tournament, strong pack but looked less organised than ever
outside that.
