It's time for a change. That's clearly the message that Warren Gatland and Sean Edwards are hammering into the team, and it's a message that the people of Wales need to take on board - because nothing kills off the atmosphere at an international more thoroughly than a crowd wallowing in self-indulgent pessimism.

In what lazy hacks from the Estern Fail have been quick to dub ‘Canarygate’, the first serious questions have been asked of Warren Gatland’s tenure as Welsh coach. In pubs and clubs the length of the country, drunken supporters who have not yet analysed the game closely enough to be considered ‘fit for purpose’ on Gwlad are nonetheless united in their condemnation of Gatland’s selection for the Canada game. ‘It’s just a CLASsic case of OVEr-confidence,’ said one drunken chief executive of the WRU who wished not to be named, ‘when a succESSful coach believes that he can SELect fifteen canARies and still wiN.’

Last week turned out to be Isandhlwana, but Gwlad’s very own camp insider (the Reverend Otto TAI) has recorded a number of brief discussions between Welsh players and management in Pretoria this week that suggest that Saturday could end up like Rorke’s Drift. In other words, four thousand South Africans (and let’s not quibble about the Boer/Zulu distinction now that the Springboks have a black coach) against 100 or so Welshmen, most of whom are injured.
