Warriors vs Penrith

If ever a game told the tale of the Warriors this season, their 19-18 golden point loss to Penrith was it. They had opportunities to run up the score on the Panthers, last season they would have, as the refs were on their side with two sin bins (the second being dubious). But the Warriors through their conservative and passive style, almost similar to the Black Caps, let the Panthers come back and take the lead with less than two minutes to go. Penrith then gives up a penalty, Warriors tie, and then in OT do the same passive conservative shit and lose to a James Maloney drop goal.

Positives?

Karl Lawton starting at hooker and Jazz Tevaga starting at lock really got momentum for the Warriors in the first half as the pair ran and spun like two RBs in a Madden video game. Bunty Afoa and Sam Lisone were aggressive when coming off the bench while Isaiah Papalii played his best game of the season with several bone crunching hits.

Another positive was watching James Maloney have a meltdown when the two sin bins happened, really thought he might get sent off as well.

Negatives?

A lot. Again, this loss defined the whole season.

Their strategy and game management was the thing that lost this game.

The Warriors allowed the Panthers too much room to run. Watching it from Mt Smart you saw Penrith running 10 metres on every play while the Warriors stood back and let the attack come to them. They also allowed the Panthers to offload at will which the Panthers did nicely.

Kearney has been shit at managing his bench this year and he did it here with Nathaniel Roache, whose career he has probably just ended.

There was about 25 minutes to go in the game and it was obvious Roache was buggered, a perfect time to bring Lawton back on to change the tempo of the game. Nope, he leaves Roache out there, who has just returned from yet another lengthy injury, and with around 15 minutes to go Roache goes for a dummyhalf run and blows out his ACL. Had he pulled him when he was already tired Roache would be ready for next week. Now his career is done. Fin. Nice work Mooks.

Another career ending is that of Blake Green who is too old to carry this team around. Chanel Harris-Tevita or Adam Keighran better be ready to play some games in 2020 because I doubt Green can play the whole 2020 season.

Instead of wasting cap space on Matt Lodge the Warriors would be wiser to spend some money on a replacement halfback like Aidan Sezer or Sam Williams from Canberra, both of whom are available, or Ryley Jacks from the Gold Coast. The Warriors can still pick up a good frontrower in Lachlan Timm who is doing well in the NSW Cup and would be a cheap acquisition.

Just seeing this again, it's incredible he wasn't sent off.

I know i have said in the past league is better for the fact they don't send guys from the field for every little thing, but this absolutely should have seen a send off. It was blatant, it happened right in front of the ref, he saw it, and yet all the piss weak bastard did was put it on report. That is a giant cop out.

That sums up league refereeing. Such a simple game, largely played by simpletons and the refs conspire through astonishing incompetence to make it a mockery.

NRL actually gets it right and send George straight to the judiciary. 8-10?

Warriors find another way to snatch a loss from the jaws of victory. We are a busted flush, time to burn the house down and start again. Kearney out. But where to now? I don't see light at the end of the tunnel. Who can they get to coach? I watched part 2 of keeping the Faith today. The end, where they let Ali go made me so sad. That team was so good. Perhaps they need to try and reinvent that time by plucking a hungry up and coming reserve grade coach from oz a-la Daniel Anderson?

Maybe the best thing that could have happened is if they'd hired Lodge, then I could have given up on them once and for all, instead they're likely to inflict many more years of misery on my life.

you know why? Expectation. When the Warriors are on, it comes as a surprise, which brings its own high. Fuck being a Storm supporter. Yes your team turns up, game after game, season after season, and is always on. But where is the joy? only the crushing disappointment of another Grand Final loss. Booooring.

We put up with drudge. Game after game. Season after season. And then BANG!! we go on a tear, knock over some great teams playing unreal football. And it is glorious. Made better because you know it's fleeting. Next season (or even next week) we will be back to the mean.

Twas ever thus.

Seriously, i have the same issue with the Warriors as i have with the Taipans. If we are going to lose most weeks, can we at least lose by playing fun football? This turgid shit we turn up with at the moment is unsuccessful and boring.

Spare a thought for the Bronco supporters. This is a club that is used to contending. The play finals basically every year. Gun stadium, all the money, free to air games every fucking weekend.

And they suck. And there isn't much light at the end of their tunnel either. Boyd and McCulloch are shit and taking up a whack of their cap, so are pretty much undroppable. This season is a write-off, but where is the improvement next year coming from?

Just read a game thread from last night, NRL fans and their attitude to the Storm sort of amuses me.

To read any thread, you would think they are the only team that wrestles/ the grubbiest team in the comp/are part of an NRL conspiracy to help them. It's fucking bizarre. Then someone will bring up the salary cap thing, and then sort of suggest they are still over it, despite their team being full of absolute nobodies.

Then it starts on Cam Smith being shit. Bellamy being shit. It's amazing to me a team plays the prelim at least every year with a shit coach.

I have no particular love for the Storm, probably mainly because they are always at the pointy end. But the shit they cop, mainly from Sydney fans of crap clubs is amazing. I don't even really hold the cap thing against them, as it was basically them trying to hold on to gun players they developed.

They never sign superstars. In fact they are never in the market for them. When was the last time you heard a "Latrell to the Storm" type rumour? They either develop their own, or they take spuds, off-casts, and rejects from other clubs, and turn them in to GF-standard players. They are a model club, and yet all they cop is shit for it. The fact they are more hated than the Roosters astounds me

@mariner4life their formula to success is a pretty simple one , and maybe being based in Melbourne watching how the afl clubs go about it has something to do with it , I’m amazed others don’t copy it , maybe they just lack the patience and want an instant fix .

But it’s sign the best 17 year old kids on the market , putting heaps of coaching development into them getting them ready .

While others are chasing the big names on the market , they are mostly locking up the signatures of talented kids .

Even Newcastle lad Brett Finch thought the refs were having a laugh when Hiku was knocked out cold and they allowed the game to continue several more plays until the Knights scored.
